the characters are shallow, the plot is sluggish and the love story is, ultimately, predictable. Perhaps I expected too much? A redeeming point however is the final twist.

I thoroughly enjoyed this delightful historical fiction novel by Julie Klassen. The main character Lillian Haswell is such a bright, intelligent woman trying to find her place in life in early England when women could not be involved in medicine. Wonderful characters and very well written, I hated for it to end.

Poor character development; could have used a good editor and a focused plot. Lilly, apparently meant to be so strong-minded and smart, comes off instead as a boy-crazy ninny with ever-sweating palms and a propensity for "biting back" her words again...and again. Irritating read, but I did stick with it.

I love The Lady of Milkweed Manor. This one is just as good. Julie Klassen is definitely an author to keep your eyes on. Now I have to get the last one of her books. Hopefully she continues to write more.
