5 out of 5 stars Outstanding   July 3, 2010

I thought this was a beautiful and wholesome story! I felt like 85% of the book was regular, everyday goings-on in a small village (with typical good and bad relationships and events) which sounds boring, yet I could not put the book down! I loved the ending, which felt like the finale to a fireworks display... just when I thought there couldn't be something else to find out, BANG! there was! Lots going on in the last 30 pages!! Loved it! I would definitely recommend this one!

4 out of 5 stars out of the ordinary romance novel   June 30, 2010
Gretchen L. Rix
The Apothecary's Daughter is good reading as a romance novel, but rises above many of its competitors due to its detailed description of what eventually became the pharmacy profession, of the fight between doctors and apothecaries for the right to treat with drugs, and with its story of how women were treated if they trespassed into male territory here. None of this plot takes anything away from the romance either. Good job.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not her best   June 21, 2010

I've read a number of books by this author and have always admired her character development. And that's one thing I admired about this book too, but yet this one wasn't my favorite. There were a large number of characters who were sometimes called by first names and sometimes last names - took a while to get them all sorted out. And I also wasn't sure about the main character... was she courageous and determined or was she uncertain and simpering?

All in all a good book; I learned something about the history of apothecaries and their early relationship to the medical world. I also enjoyed watching the main character grow into adulthood. But found myself losing interest at times throughout the story.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely Historical Romance   June 17, 2010

I am a big fat lover of historical romances. I love "Whitney, My Love" by Judith McNaught and Alison Weir's "The Lady Elizabeth". I'd been meaning to read "The Apothecary's Daughter" for so long. Finally I bought a Kindle and saw this book available as a freebie. I'm so glad that I read it.

In this book, Klassen writes about Lillian Haswell, an apothecary's daughter who is sharp, intelligent, kind, fiercely loyal and dutiful. Her simple life complicates when she is adopted by her uncle-aunt and moves to the city with them. She learns the ways of the city, is educated, cultured and makes her debut in society. She has the attentions of a couple of men too.

But she hears about her father's deteriorating health and the state of their family apothecary shop, and goes back to her small village of Bedsley Priors. There is a love triangle that occurs then between Lilly, her father's former apprentice and a doctor she met back in the city.

All throughout also is Lilly's search for her mother, who ran away when she and her brother were little. She wants to find out why her mother did so, where she went and whether there could be any way to trace her back again.

This story is about family, responsibility, love, romance and friendship. In parts, this book is both poignant and humourous. Klassen narrates beautifully the emotional turmoil that goes on in the minds of her characters. I couldn't help but liken Lilly Haswell to Cinderella. If you're a fan of fairy tale romances and happy endings, this book is for you.

Julia Klassen is now on my list of favorite authors. Her other books are officially on my wish list now.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolutely Fantastic Surprise   June 13, 2010

I'd previously read Lady of Milkweed Manor and wasn't sure what to expect with Klassen's second novel in this series. I was pleasantly surprised!

This is a novel that rivals historical romance classics for its character development, humor, intrigue, and storyline twists. The story spends a majority of the time on romance, suitors, and feelings. While there is a bit of heavy subject matter, it's not overwhelming or detracting to the story. Also, I personally found the elements of "girl power" fun and refreshing. Here's a lady striving for equality in a society that won't respect her business sense. The historical touches were definitely enlightening and well-placed (although I'm no judge of accuracy).

I found relating to the main character easy and enjoyable. I laughed, cried, and finally rejoiced with her throughout reading the book. Klassen really makes the reader want to root for the main character. You become emotionally involved. I couldn't put it down.

I like generally-happy romance novels, and this one fits the bill. It's a keeper. Two thumbs up! :)
