Really 2.5 stars August 14, 2010 kasbts (Birmingham, AL United States) Maybe my expectations were too high, but this book did nothing for me. It was just OK. At one point, I thought about putting it down and reading another book instead, but I stuck with it. I just wanted something, anything to happen but it droned on about the same old thing.
Alright, kind of empty... August 8, 2010 S. Vardakis (Kansas City, KS) I had only read one other Nicholas Sparks novel before this one ('The Notebook', which I loved), and I had not seen the movie adaptation before reading this novel (now I have, didn't care for it). I thought this was an okay book, it felt kind of empty to me though. I felt like there wasn't enough character development in this book, I really didn't care what happened to either of the two main characters. The thing that I was most interested in was the relationship between John and his father. I liked that story and would have enjoyed a longer story based on that alone. I was just disappointed in this book. I had had high hopes for it, had heard very good things about it. I was let down, unfortunately. I did not like the ending at all. I can't get into it on here without giving away too much, but I will say that I didn't find it believable at all. I don't see that situation ever happening in real life, ever. It was put in to seem romantic and selfless, but it backfired.
5 Stars! August 3, 2010 Jessica_G Very good novel. Sweet and romantic and a little sad. The movie doesn't do it justice, the book is 10x better!!
It was confusing and boring July 26, 2010 Ali Tuttobene 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I managed to watch the entire movie and it started out really strong. It was a joy to watch and then it just got bad. The plot went from topic to topic I had no idea what was going on or what the underlying message was supposed to be. For me, this is the worst movie of the year.
good book July 19, 2010 Sweety2100 It was a great summer read. Much much much better than the movie! The characters were real, the love that they felt for one another was real, and in the end the ending was super realistic. He chose to enlist a second time, and the women felt like he chose the Army over their future. She couldn't wait around for forever, and she had someone in her life that needed her more than John did.
