1 out of 5 stars Poorly written   June 4, 2010

I love history and being conservative was looking forward to reading this. But after 3 days of reading, with each night thinking, "Why am I wasting my time with this?" I finally gave up. The writing is a mile wide and an inch deep. It seems as if was put together by their students with a lot of facts but no context or analysis. There are conclusions however about how capitalism saves the day without any real support for that view. I'm an avid reader and this is only the third book I didn't finish in decades of reading.

Socialism overthrew the Aztecs and the Incas.

Who'd have thunk it?

These creeps.

If you are a connoisseur of lies and omission, here's your bible.

This is a well done and interesting book. The section about hollywood actors signing up to fight during WW2 came as a complete surprise. Long book, but easy to pick out a specific time frame if needed. Well worth the time....

1 out of 5 stars George W. Bush's Text Book   May 28, 2010

If you like our former president's "Go with your gut in spite of glaring evidence to the contrary," then this is the book for you. I will highlight a few passages that strengthen this notion. "History speaks for itself." History does not speak for itself. History is the accounts of various people passed along through various formats and edited countless times in the process. The perspective of the observer, the re-teller, and ultimately the reader inherently skews everything we know about history. This book claims to offer you "objective history," yet in practice it is little more than agit-prop.

For example - the author skewers "academics" for focusing on the major holes in the drafting of the constitution regarding slavery. The author states that it was the keen foresight of the drafters of the constitution that allowed the issue to be considered further at a later date. That "keen insight" lead to the most costly expenditure of American lives in its short history.

The author states, "America is the last, best hope for the survival of the world." The world existed long before America, and it is specifically this arrogance that will allow it to exist once America sinks into irrelevance. I am a patriot who looks back at history and observes that superpowers like America collapse not from external threat but through the overextension abroad and impractical self-importance at home (Rome and Great Britain and most recently the Soviet Union exemplify my point most clearly).

Ultimately, the author asks the reader to ignore the bloody past of America and return to the gilded history we learn in elementary school.

I was a history major in college but I learned more from this book than than any other history book (or class). We home school our kids, I was so impressed with this book that I am using this book for our kids.

If you really want to learn about the United States, I highly recommend this book.
