5 out of 5 stars You Must Read This!!!!!!   June 16, 2010

This is one of those books that will change the way you look at America. If you're like me then you'll probably finish pissed off that you've been lied to throughout high school. And don't believe the hype of those one star reviews because there are endnotes in the back through which you can verify almost all of the claims that are made in this book. The history runs from Columbus all the way to Bush so it is just a general timeline and there's a lot that's left out but it's a good introduction to our history. A lot of the focus seems to be on the presidents and what each one contributed and the politics surrounding their ascension to office. It's fascinating to me to see how politics has shaped policies over the years and you can trace how some the FDR programs and The Great Society have contributed to some of the issues we have today.
But the most interesting part for me as an African American is reading about our founders and the countries early struggle over racism. A Patriot's History doesn't sugar coat it. He admits that many of our founders owned slaves (he just doesn't omit facts that he doesn't think are convenient, a far cry from most history books today) but he also uses their own words to tell you their conflicted feelings on the issue. He presents the different sides to this very complex issue more so than most texts. One of the biggest lies he exposed for me personally was the myth of Abraham Lincoln.
I remember being taught in high school that the Emancipation Proclamation was just a way to recruit slaves to the North because they were so outnumbered by the massive Southern force, that Abraham Lincoln was a just another racist who wanted to exploit African Americans. Incredible. The real numbers during the Civil War will open your eyes and this book even touches on the relationship between Lincoln and Frederick Douglas.
I don't care what your political bent is read this book, look at the actual words of these historical figures, and decide for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars The History Your Were NOT Taught   June 12, 2010

There is a lot of reading in this book. Small print makes for slow going, but the content is well worth the effort. The historical perspective is almost foriegn to much of what we have been taught. A must read for anyone that is serious about exploring our nation's rise. It is amazing to learn that Christian tradition has been woven into our history from the very beginning. Only in recent years have we been bullied by the left into the current interpretation to removal of any Christian beliefs or aknowledgement of God.

5 out of 5 stars Wish this had been my textbook in High School   June 8, 2010

Buy this. I picked up the audio book because of time constraints and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Patrick Lawlor has a pleasant voice, and I appreciate his attempts at accents, and using "character voice" for various prominent historical figures.

Of course the authors have done an outstanding job on this volume. I'm going to assume that since it was recorded in 2007 that the errors mentioned in an earlier review by David Dougherty have been corrected? Since it's audio I have no way of flipping back to aforementioned pages to double check. Perhaps since he ammended his critique, he can speak to this question.

A fantastic perspective on the history of this unique nation that should be in the library of every home, or used as a textbook in American History classrooms. Replete with direct quotes, and balanced criticisms of political leaders and Presidents.

Memory is a gift. It reminds us who we are, where we've been, why certain choices were made, and what mistakes to avoid. If you feel as I do that the collective memory of America has been fading - consider this book a dose of ginko biloba.

The audio book is worth having for the extremely busy person who can enjoy it in the car.

Long term I will also be buying the paperback, so that I can highlight areas, and take notes.

5 out of 5 stars The Best U.S. History Text Available in the United States   June 7, 2010

A Patriot's History of the United States: From Columbus's Great Discovery to the War on Terror should be THE standard text for ALL History classes in the Lower, Middle and High Schools. U.S. students must learn a bit about what has transpired to get us where we are today.
