4 out of 5 stars Great read; surprisingly dark   July 20, 2010

Fun and absorbing read--one of those books you feel like you could read in a day! And one of those books where you feel like you really lose yourself in time/scenery. A bit dark. But good.

2 out of 5 stars Portrait of a Sourpuss   July 17, 2010

I looked long and hard to find any redeeming characteristic in Olive. She was disagreeable, opinionated, rude, full of malice. I never figured out why. Nothing about her allowed me to recognize her as a fellow human being. I despised the way she treated Henry and Christopher. So thoroughly she debased each one, I was upset because they did not straighten her out. They must have seen something in her that I missed. Olive never felt she had done anything wrong. And yet, I must admit, she did come to some semblance of recognition of the damage she wrought, but she did not, even then, appear to be sorry. To end up with a true fellow curmudgeon seemed appropriate. I must have liked it enough to read the entire book so I gave it two stars.

2 out of 5 stars Depressing.   July 17, 2010

Why was this book written? I like books to either entertain me or educate me. This did neither. If anything, it depressed me. I hated Olive with a passion from the first story and nearly didn't finish the book, but hoped that - since the back cover pormised that she'd be the common thread - she'd improve. I took Oprah's word on this one, and was extremely disappointed. Wall banger.

5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Read   July 16, 2010

Olive Kitteridge is a collection of stories bound together by the figure of Olive, a powerful, unbending woman who victimizes her husband and alienates her only son. The stories cover a period of 30+ years and depict the central moments in the lives of Olive and her neighbors, inhabitants of Crosby, Maine.

This book is an exploration of the topics of life and death, the loneliness we experience in and out of human relationships, lack of understanding between parents and children, husbands and wives.

At times, the book is melancholy, sad and even heartbreaking. Sometimes, it is also extremely funny. I strongly recommend it to anyone in search of good English prose.

1 out of 5 stars Who? What? Why?   July 14, 2010

I spent the whole book saying to myself who is this person? What did they do? Why are we hearing about them? I just didn't get it. Pick one story and write about it.
