I am NOT from the South, I had no idea things were like that? Hopefully they're not anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Who should play Minny in the movie?   July 26, 2010
L. Humphrey (Richmond, VA)
I just finished "The Help" and based on the 2000+ reviews, you know the storyline. I really want to see this book on film! As I was reading, I couldn't help thinking Oprah would be a good Minny or Abileen. Cate Blanchett as Skeeter, perhaps? I would love to see this book come to life. I gave the book 4 stars because I felt no sense of closure. The ending was quite flat and boring; however, I enjoyed the first 400 pages.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating   July 26, 2010

A friend of mine suggested the book, and I could not put down the book until it was finished. The story about three different women set in Miss. , pre civil rights is was very telling of the emotions, and life style at the time. My favorite character was Minny, the sassy maid.

3 out of 5 stars Feel like I didn't get to know who the maid characters were   July 26, 2010

I liked the book in terms of its suspense but feel the author didn't develop the maid characters too well. I feel like I didn't really know who they were aside from women who suffered family/financial struggles and who feared and served white people. What about their happy moments, their passions and appreciation for life-where's their drive, their individuality?

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - Very True to the Spirit of the Time   July 25, 2010

Much as I remembered growing up in Birmingham in the early sixties and my experiences with my grandparents in Jackson, Tennessee. I stayed many summers 'working' on the small farms my grandparents owned around Humboldt and Milan. The book captured the feelings I had as a upper middle class youngster and our attitudes about the help, especially Sally, our help.
