Review of Audio version July 28, 2010 Reader in NC 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The audio version of The Help is superb! The 3 women who read the parts of Skeeter, Aibileen, and Minnie are excellent. I know I would have enjoyed reading the book, but I really think that listening to this one (especially if you are not accustomed to reading or hearing southern dialect) is the best!
Excellent Book July 27, 2010 stormie (Surrounded by kids) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This rates as the best book I have read in a long time (and I read a book a week, most genres). The writing is excellent, as is the pacing. A reader can understand the feelings of each character without the author belaboring the issues.
The Help July 27, 2010 Stewart 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Just amazing...I travel a lot and listened to it through an audio book, which was amazing in itself. Their were different narrators for each character, made the book come alive in my mind. 18 hours of audio book, I just had to buy the actual book and read it...Truly the highlight of my summer reading. I suggest this book to anyone who loves a great novel.
I believe that I had a deep connection with the book because I am from the South and it made me think about my own childhood.
Wonderful and Moving July 27, 2010 S. Kaprove (CT, USA) This story is so compelling that I could hardly put it down. The characters are so well developed that you feel like you know them. When the book ended, I found myself saying 'wait, I want more'! Some of the stories are hilarious, others are sad, but you are left feeling like you understand the south in the 60's a lot better. With such a complex topic, that is quite an accomplishment. If you like historical fiction novels, you should not miss this book!
I absolutely LOVE this book July 26, 2010 SandyKB I grew up with a "maid" and I adored her. Reading this book makes me think of her so fondly---she talked just like the characters in the book. At the time I knew she was being given the raw end of the core of life, I felt bad for her but I was a kid. Now as I look back I realize how demeaning her lot in life was and shame on anyone who used a black person as a maid and made them wear those dreadful white uniforms. I never ever remember our 'maid' using our kithen table, the bathroom or even eating. She had a bath in the basement and I guess she ate down there. She was raising three kids of her own plus us for a measly amount of money. She never snitched on me even when I told her my best secrets.
I cannot imagine anyone not loving this book---I am in the middle of it and do not want it to end. I highly recommend The Help !!!!!
