Insightful Thoughtful September 5, 2009 R. Interrante (Albuquerque.) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
For those who have not had the experience of living in a time when folks of color were treated like contemporary slaves as a matter of course, much lower than second class citizens, this is a good book to ease you into that world. Even as it gravitates too often toward softening hard edges and leaning precariously toward sentimentalism Kathryn Stockett's characters are portrayed with realism and sensitivity. The bigots are not aware they are carrying on a tradition of mindless collective racism. Some of the characters are actually convinced they being humane to black people is a selfless act of generosity toward an unfortunate and inferior race. They are convinced they are doing African Americans a favor by letting them scrub their floors and clean up their childrens' messes. Still other white folks in the novel have a nagging sense that something is out of whack, but do not have the spine to support the change necessary to be complete human beings.
Overall it is a very good read. Often thoughtful and insightful, I found myself carried away rooting for the underdogs. And the underdogs were not the only target where prejudice and ignorance were aimed.
The book has value and Ms. Stockett has performed a service by resurrecting a time in our recent history from which we all still live with and feel consequences of that behavior. Good work and thank you Ms. Stockett
Don't miss! September 4, 2009 Lauren Elliot 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
Oh, boy, this was a great read. I jumped right in and didn't look back. The story, set in Mississippi at a very volitale time, is mesmerizing. I had to know what happened and kept reading and reading until I was finished. It's an instant classic, that's for sure. Also recommend: The Time Traveler's Wife.

My favorite read this summer; in fact, one of the best books ever. I was the same age as the white females during that time and I had almost forgotten about the race issues of the sixties. The characters were so real they stepped right out of my kindle!

This is the best book I've read in a very long time. It was just one of those books you couldn't put down... the kind you consider using a sick day for so you can finish. Just simply a great read anyone could enjoy!! Trust the hype!
