The help September 8, 2009 W. Books (Michigan) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Growing up in the 50's, my parents would take me on vacation to Florida. It was quite a drive through the south seeing the shacks some black people lived in just off the 2 lane roads we traveled. The poverty was unforgettable. They did not have jobs as "help" or otherwise. I saw separate drinking fountains and knew about blacks having to ride in the back of the bus. Customs, I assumed, peculiar to the south. Watching the riots and marches for civil rights in the 60's I thought I had a good grasp of the situation having seen segregation first hand. The Help will open your eyes and mind to the lives so many blacks lived during the years and years of segregation. This book is labeled fiction but you will have a difficult time disbelieving the story as it unfolds. I highly recommend The Help.

Excellent book. I've never read anything by this author before, but certainly will again. The book was riviting -- couldn't put it down! I would recommend it to anyone. Bravo!
The Help September 8, 2009 Sharon S. Mobraaten 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I enjoyed this book very much. The characters were very interesting. The story moved along. It was a good history lesson on what life was like for back and white women in the south during the 60s.
Amazing work September 8, 2009 Joyce in KY 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I just finished The Help, and I sincerely hated to see it end. My husband asked, "Did it end well...?" and I thought, "Well, I guess we can't follow the characters forever... but I wish we could." I loved everything about the characters and the writing of this book. The author took liberties with some of the historical details (which she readily admits in the acknowledgments) but that doesn't distract from the overall tone of the book. It's a rare work that entertains and makes you think about genuine social issues all at once, and this one pulls it off beautifully. Bravo.
Thoughtful & Engaging September 8, 2009 Gr8ful (Southern California) Set in Jackson Mississippi in the early 1960's this book is a gripping remembrance of the fight for justice in the U.S. not all that long ago. This tale deals with injustice, spousal abuse, racial and economic prejudice, Jim Crow laws, the Civil Rights movement and many other weighty subjects... but does so in a palatable way.
The author does a great job bringing the story to life with various character voices and perspectives which ring true. Much of the book takes place in the neighborhood where Medgar Evans was gunned down in 1963. I thoroughly enjoyed the historical setting and found the book engaging and poignant.
I would give it five stars except there were a few chapters that were too slow. I would definitely recommend this book.
