A book that would make a great movie September 2, 2010 9flights (Brooklyn, NY) I've read the book and seen the movie and I have to admit that I liked the movie better. That said, this was a fun read and I blew through it in order to read the other two, all in a week.
The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo September 1, 2010 Debra J. Clark (Detroit, Michigan USA) I almost gave up on the book because of the excess of characters that I could not remember. But about half way through, the story finally grab me. I liked the main characters. I am somewhat disturbed by the author writing so many gruesome happenings in the book and I have to wonder what type of person could even think of these things. The book could have been written, I think, just as exciting with a bit less gruesome activity. I already purchased the next book as I was told it was good. I hope I am not disappointed. If it is a copy of the first one, i.e., gruesome, I will be disappointed.
Girl with Dragon Tattoo September 1, 2010 June E. Robeen (Ilinois) 0 out of 5 found this review helpful
The book arrived new and quickly. However because I could not pronounce most names and it seemed to be about financial politics I couldn't get into it and gave it away.
Mmmm liver pate and pickle sandwiches... September 1, 2010 Altbuttercup (Toronto, CAN) This is an above-average thriller. I've read better in the genre but plenty more that are worse. It does bulk out because of the overly descriptive style, including a full ingredient list of every sandwich the characters eat. However, if you motor through books quickly, this one will hold you over for a couple evenings.
Meh. September 1, 2010 John L. USMC (Chicago, USA) My mother, who is Swedish, read this in the original language and highly recommended it. There's an awful lot of Swedish culture and language that doesn't translate easily or exactly ... which certainly hinders the book for an American audience.
That said, it reads like a first novel (and for a very good reason: it is). "Clunky" comes to mind. Plot threads are introduced and then just ... dangle (Lisabeth's tatooed Advokat comes to mind). The story bounces awkwardly between murder mystery and political screed, with the murder mystery being wrapped up several chapters before the other stuff gets hastily wrapped up. The protagonist is just too suave with the ladies, and it doesn't help that he's very clearly a stand-in for the author, making the book read more like a middle-aged guy's fantasy. Worst, though, is the unrelenting brutality, almost all of it directed at the female characters. The Swedish title "Men Who Hate Women" was quite apt.
Had the author lived to be able to work with a good editor, this book would have been so much better.
As disappointed as I am with the novel (I won't be reading the rest of the trilogy unless under duress) I still have this odd hankering for an open-faced herring and pickle sandwich on rye bread.....
