I felt in love with Salander September 3, 2010 gian andrea I loved the characters and the story. I read the saga in one single breath.
I'll miss the girl with the dragon tattoo.
Thanks Stieg
Trash September 3, 2010 Andrew Katz (USA) Mindless trash.
This is not a book. It is at best an outline for a BAD book.
Reminds me of a joke. A fellow comes to a publisher and says, "I want to be a writer". The publisher looks him over and asks, "Have you read much?" The fellow answers, "But I do not want to be a reader. I want to be a writer!" This could have been about Larsson.
Characters? They have no personality. Two dimensional cardboard cut outs. The reader has not a clue what motives them, what makes them tick.
Mystery? The prologue all but gives away the store. Reader's first guess at "solution" proves to be correct.
Story? One could drive a truck through the holes. A girl who can hack into bank accounts of a powerful industrialist and rob him blind has to submit to sexual extortion because she needs a few thousand kroner of her own money? A girl who can hack any computer cannot alter her state records forcing her to be dependent on unscrupulous (and otherwise) lawyers and bureaucrats? Give me a break!
SWEDISH SLEUTHS September 3, 2010 P. King (Norfolk, England.) A little bit slow away, but once in its stride was absolutely enthralling. All the stars of the book had really separate characters. This was a side to Sweden that I had never envisaged - ruthless activities to keep their businesses alive. I've got two more of Stieg's books to read, and look forward to an enthralling time!!
Should make an excellent movie September 3, 2010 Paula C. Aird A pale, anorexic young woman with a dragon tattoo on her left shoulder is the heroine of this story. Behind her sullen facade, Lisbeth Salander has an unusual intelligence and is quite the computer hacker.
The main plot deals with Lisbeth working for Mickael Blomkvist who has been given the impossible task by Henrik Vanger of finding out which family member killed his beloved grand niece Hariet Vanger.
A very interesting side plot deals with Salander and her guardian Bjurman, who was a sadist and a rapist. That scene in which she 'fixed him well and proper' was priceless. Unfortunately that was the last we saw of Bjurman. I would have liked to view his predicament in a doctor's office or at a tattoo parlour looking for a tattoo cover-up.
It seems that the villains in the story after wreacking so much havoc get off much too easily. This was somewhat dissatisfying.
highly overrated September 2, 2010 M. Price (seattle, wa) Although I am not really a mystery fan, if a book is well written, I am more than happy to dig in. With all the hype surrounding this series and friends who loved this book I was really hoping to enjoy this book. I thought it would be somehow different. From the very beginning I found it to be quite formulaic, very much a mystery novel. Which is fine if that's what you're in to. The title character is interesting, and parts of the book are engrossing, but on the whole I found it to be very unevenly written and really not that good. I liked the second book even less. I was really expecting more.
