Product Description
In 1860s Seattle, a man with a wife could secure himself 640 acres of timberland. But because of his wife's untimely death, Joe Denton finds himself about to lose half of his claim. Still in mourning, his best solution is to buy one of those Mercer girls arriving from the East. A woman he'll marry in name but keep around mostly as a cook. Anna Ivey's journey west with Asa Mercer's girls is an escape from the griefs of her past. She's not supposed to be a bride, though, just a cook for the girls. But when they land, she's handed to Joe Denton and the two find themselves in a knotty situation. She refuses to wed him and he's about to lose his land. With only a few months left, can Joe convince this provoking--but beguiling--easterner to be his bride?

4 out of 5 stars Good light read!   August 1, 2010
A. Labno (Illinois, USA)
Half of the book was just wonderful. I enjoyed it very much!!! The book was very engaging. It was humorous at times that made me smile. You can tell that the author has a good sense of humor. I was anticipating the relationship growing between hero and heroine. Then something happened in the middle of the book that the story could just have ended sooner. To me it seemed that the author did not have everything played out to hold the reader anticipating to the rest of the story. It seemed that she came up with the events for another half of the book when she was developing relationship of the couple concentrating on it too much and nothing else. I felt as if I would jump out of the book and became just an observer and not too much interested of what happens next. The scenes became too sweet for my taste. I wish that the author would keep up with her humor and more intriguing scenes. Also, she keeps repeating the same knowledge in her books. I wish for something new. She is capable to create a perfect book like "Maid To Match" written by the same author.
But I enjoyed the book, and I will be looking for more books written by the author.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Gist book so far!   July 23, 2010

I enjoy Deeanne Gist's books. They are fun, interesting, and easy reads... great entertainment! I also like that her books aren't saturated with detailed sex scenes, but still offer enough tension and innocent sensuality (if that is possible) too keep it hot. I also like that she infuses enough spiritual dilemmas to keep me thinking, but does not hit me over the head with religious rhetoric. She adds enough historical detail to keep it interesting, without adding so much that it veers off from the storyline. Overall, I feel she manages these delicate balances very well in her writing.

This book is my favorite Gist book because I feel the characters were well developed, as was their romance. The romance was realistic and wasn't too cheesy or rushed. The conflict didn't seem forced, although at times you want to knock some sense into main character, Anna. That being said, however, you can somewhat relate to Anna's dilemmas and work through them right along with her. And you ache for the sacrifices the characters have to make for each other. Perhaps I liked this book best because some of the themes were more personal for me... the challenge of giving up what you thought you wanted most of all because there is something even better in store for you; or being willing to make big sacrifices to be with people you love. I felt the dilemmas in this story were the most realistic of any of Gist's book.

5 out of 5 stars This will be one I will re-read someday!   June 14, 2010

What a amazing romance. It has humor, passion and everything you could want in a clean romance. I loved the characters and how they interacted with each other and the humor Deeanne brings into her novels makes me laugh out loud. I'ver read some of the bad reviews on this book and I couldn't disagree more. But just look at the numbers. As of this review over 80 loved it and only 10 didn't. Decide for yourself but IMO it's a sweet romance and I look forward to reading it again someday.

5 out of 5 stars A Bride in the Bargain   June 10, 2010

Joe Denton really doesn't want a wife. His first wife died ten years ago, but now the judge in Seattle is threatening to take away Joe's land, since it is supposed to go to a married man. And Joe can't produce a death certificate for his wife. In desperation, Joe buys himself a Mercer bride--and eastern orphan brought into the Territory by entrepreneur Asa Mercer.

Anna Ivey was desperate to escape a lecherous boss, and so signs on with Mercer to go west and work as a cook. She has no intentions of marrying. And when she's handed over to Joe, she is shocked when he expects her to be his bride. Anna adamantly refuses, jeopardizing Joe's land.

Joe only has mere weeks to produce a bride. But how can he convince this provoking easterner to become his lawfully wedded wife?

I have read most all of Ms. Gist's books so far, but I have to say that A BRIDE IN THE BARGAIN is the best book of hers I've read so far. I couldn't help but fall in love with Anna and Joe. Not to mention, Ms. Gist does know how to write a romance.

A BRIDE IN THE BARGAIN is full of conflict from the beginning to the end. There is also plenty of sexual tension to keep the pages turning. Readers of romance will not want to miss A BRIDE IN THE BARGAIN. It was also interesting to note that the premise for this book is based on fact. Don't miss A BRIDE IN THE BARGAIN. .

5 out of 5 stars What were they willing to do for love.   May 29, 2010
Elaine Lyons Bach (Ft.Lauderdale)
This is a lovely, easy to enjoy, historical. Joe needs a wife by a specific date to secure his lumbering business. Asa Mercer plans to transport willing brides to the mostly male populated Washington state from the Civil war ravaged Eastern States. Anna is told that she will be given much needed employment if she will travel to Washington with Mercer's Brides. She has no intention of marrying anyone - ever. Well plotted with just the right problems to be overcome as Anna resolves her fears and doubts about herself and Joe's sincerity towards her, and Joe proves that he is willing to give up all for her love. Deeanne Gist delivers a delightful gentle story with living characters and just the right amount of history throughout. [ASIN:1598009044 Gentle Journey]]
